Federación Comercializadora de Café Especial de Guatemala (FECCEG) is a cooperative located in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. This is a renowned area known for its beautiful mountain ranges, active volcanoes, and rich soils that produce unique, high-quality specialty coffees.
FECCEG, or Federación Comercializadora de Café Especial de Guatemala, is a cooperative founded in 2006 to improve market conditions for its associates and consolidate export logistics in order to achieve more direct and transparent trade.
FECCEG groups five cooperatives and eight associations. In addition to producing coffee, these organizations focus on diversified crop production for food security and additional income, as well as beekeeping.
The enthusiastic young technical team of FECCEG provides dynamic trainings in the areas of production, quality control, and organizational development.
The Santo Domingo women's lot we source through FECCEG comes from the Santo Domingo community, located in the region of Huehuetenango.
The community is made up of 16 producers, 12 of whom are women that contribute to the Santo Domingo women's lot. In total this community produces coffee over 35 hectares. The community leader of this group has been recognized with the "Medalla de la Oficina Nacional de la Mujer", an award granted by the national office of women's empowerment for dedication to promoting women's socioeconomic status in Guatemala.
The Santo Domingo community has several ongoing social projects that are implemented in conjunction with Coopecafe and FECCEG, including organic fertilizer production, beekeeping, goat keeping, and classes in agronomic best practices.
All members process coffee on their own farms. After ripe cherries are harvested, the coffee is manually sorted into lots by cherry quality, and any unripe or suboptimal cherries are removed. Then the coffee is taken to FECCEG’s dry mill and dried on concrete patios until it reaches a humidity level of 12%. It is then stored for three to five weeks in parchment form in the FECCEG warehouse to allow the coffee to settle.
All lots are then centrally milled at FECCEG’s dry mill, which fully prepares coffee for delivery to the port. Cuppers at FECCEG's quality control lab carefully evaluate coffees throughout the production process and prior to export.
FECCEG offers a wide range of social and business services for its members. The co-op provides trainings on soil management, organic fertilizer production, bio-fertilizer production, renovation management, and agroforestry management. The members place a high importance on preserving the environment and their personal health, which is why they’re committed to organic certification and use only natural fertilizers.
Since 2009, the organization has also implemented a project to diversify farms away from coffee monoculture to increase farmer income and provide a source of food security. Members of FECCEG now produce honey, beans, citrus fruits, bananas, avocados, cocoa, and more, and also raise farm animals.
FECCEG recognizes the underrepresentation of women in coffee production, and as a result has developed a board of nine women leaders from the cooperative who help guide the organization’s strategic direction, support initiatives to strengthen women's participation in coffee production, and manage micro-credit funds available to co-op members.
